We need something that works for PBEM also where the other player is not online when the die is rolled. Joel is building a stand-alone Dice Server that will be available outside of Vassal.

How does all of this interact with symbolic dice? I suppose they are,
in essence, numeric but with a special reporting message.

Symbolic dice are just special instances of standard dice. We would integrate the choice of Die roller at a low enough level that it would enable the security functionality on all types of dice.
