Can you tell me what the screen resolution is on an iPhone?

• 3.5-inch (diagonal) widescreen Multi-Touch display
• 480-by-320-pixel resolution at 163 ppi

Well, it wouldn't be impossibly small. How much RAM is there?

Well, it seems tiny to me. I find even using a 1440x900 display a bit
cramped.

As to the RAM, that number doesn't appear on the Tech Specs page for
the iPhone. All they list is the 8GB and 16GB capacity of the storage
device. I suppose they felt that only developers would care about the
RAM size.

If you're really curious, you could take a look at

But after some more searching of the documentation, I really couldn't
find any mention of RAM. Maybe with solid-state memory it doesn't
really have any such distinction? But it must, somehow, because they
have applications that have to start-up, quit and save state. Anyway,
I couldn't location any such information.

I also note that the standard language for communicating with the
applications is Objective-C, and I don't know if there is a Java VM
available. It looks like Sun was talking about creating such a thing
in March-May of this year, but nothing really since then shows up on a
Google search.

I'm only really curious if someone wants to give me an iPhone to develop
on.

And apparently 128MB of RAM, with 8GB or 16GB of flash memory.

128MB is kind of paltry. We'd need more RAM to make this usable.

I just got an iPhone (love it!). I installed the "Deluxe Lux" game (Risk like game that was a PC game port) and it runs great. Of course, that is no VASSAL as far as resources needed goes, but what is neat is that you can do the little "split finger zoom" thing in and out. This would be awesome if VASSAL could be ported over to it!

There was a long and heated discussion about Java on the iPhone on Apple's
java-dev list recently. There is no Java on the iPhone right now. As in all
matters, Apple provides no guidance whatsoever about their plans, so I can't
even make an educated guess about whether we'll see it tomorrow, next year,
or never.

Which is rediculous because the iPhone is exactly the sort of device that Java was designed for.

The BlackBerry is a java-based OS. Using the tools from both SUN and the RIM development kit I've managed to load the vengine on my Bold...but as expected it doesn't work properly. I believe the BlackBerry platform could definitely support vassal if there were a mobile client. Excellent idea.

How exactly does it fail? (Warning: I'm not interested in putting much
development time into this, unless someone gives me a BlackBerry.)

The BlackBerry expects there to be a tag associated with the .jar named "Midelt-Name". Since this property is not present it is unable to load. Perhaps you have to create a .JAD file to associate with vengine.jar?

If you don't have a BlackBerry of your own you can just use the BlackBerry simulator (http://na.blackberry.com/eng/developers/resources/simulators.jsp). This is the exact OS used by the BlackBErry handheld so it can be used to test any vassal mobile client

Well, if you want to pursue this, feel free.

Hi Gang,
Just thought I would chime in. But I read an article once on compiling java for jailbroken iPhones. Don't know how important it would be to this thread but I thougt what the heck
