Help, Vassal won't load the game board

Hi guys,

I’ve been having a problem with Vassal the last few days, something I’ve never experienced before. What happens is anytime I try to load a new scenario, or a savegame, or any new game, the game board doesn’t show up. I can still access all the tools and icons across the top, but nothing actually loads up. This happens across all modules, and whether i’m online or offline. I’ve reinstalled Vassal, and downloaded new modules, all with no change.

It seems like the board is about to load, and I think as far as Vassal knows, everything has loaded fine. For instance, this is what it looks like when i try to load a new scenario:

  • BattleLore version 1.2
  • Extension CalltoArms v1.0 loaded
  • Extension Epic_Battle v1.6 loaded
  • Extension Medieval_Wars v1.2 loaded
  • Loading 01-Agincourt …
  • Loaded 01-Agincourt

The game asks me which side to join, resizes the main window(which it has always done), lags a bit as if loading(as it has always done), but then simply fails to load the game board. I’ve been running this version of Vassal for about a month with no problems.

Any thoughts on what this might be? Any help would be greatly appriciated.

My Specs:

Lenovo Thinkpad T61
Windows Xp
Intel Core 2Duo CPU, T7300 @ 2 Ghz
Memory: 1 GB of RAM
Video Card: Not sure… whatever came with the machine
Vassal : 3.1.14
Java: 1.6.0_16
Module: ALL

One thing you should try is updating Java. You’re running a rather old
verison. The current version is 1.6.0_21. (This might not have anything
to do with your problem, but there have been a lot of bugfixes since
the version you’re running.)

The second thing to check is whether you’re getting anything in the
errorLog. Look under the Help menu in the Module Manager for that.

J.

This sounds like the map resizing window bug (which has been around forever and never fixed).

When your window resizes is your window being filled entirely by the chat part of the window (type something in the window to see where the text appears when you hit enter)?
If it is (at the bottom), that is the problem - you need to drag the horizontal bar at the bottom of the chat window up to reveal the map. The board is loading - you just can’t see it when the map window is resizing itself

Thanks for the quick response. I updated java as you suggested and am now running 1.6.0_21. Still getting the same problem though.

I also checked the Error Log, but I can’t see anything that looks like an error. This is what is shown:

Again, thanks for the quick response. My window stays basically the same size when i try to load the scenario( about 1/4 to 1/3 of the screen), so i don’t think it’s that. Though the window does resize itself a small amount, which generally would happen.

Not quite what I mean about resizing - take a screenshot after you load a game and post it so we can see the vassal window

Ok, here’s a screenshot after i try to load up a scenario.

Also, interestingly enough, the module i’m using comes with it’s own screenshot function. I took a screenshot of the board, and it looked like this. So obviously the board is loading, though it seems like it’s missing all the generic tiles. Sorry about the pic, I forgot to resize it.

Yep, that is the map/chat window resize bug.

Ive edited your second image. As indicated, what you have to do is drag up the dotted horizontal bar to reveal the map. Do this after you resize the Vassal window so you have room to drag this bar up
