Download speed

Hi,
I’m getting an extremly low download speed whenever I try to get a module (unless the link takes me to other site). Is this normal?

We’re saturating (the outbound half of) our internet connection right now.
This is why everything–downloads, the site, the game server—is so slow.

Doing something about this is nontrivial. We need either (1) more outgoing
bandwidth, or (2) less outgoing data.

We could do (1) by colocating our server at a data center down the street
from our current host, but this will be more expensive. We could do (2)
by switching module distribution to BitTorrent. I’m presently looking into
both options.

Please let us know several days in advance if you switch to BitTorrent as Comcast customers will not be able to download.

Thanks for the answer.

The plan wasn’t to switch to BitTorrent exclusively, but rather to offer it
as a (much faster) download alternative.

Comcast’s treatment of BitTorrent traffic is a prime example of why you
should ask your congresspeople to support net neutrality.

How much do you know about the details of what Comcast does? If their
throttling is based on amount of traffic, then I doubt that downloading
VASSAL modules would trigger it—two or three people downloading movies
for a day could esaily produce as much traffic as our whole site sees for
module downloads over the same period.

Thanks for the info, J.

I do support net neutrality with all the means I have available. I will check about the Comcast details but what I read on their forum is that they just plain do not support it.
