Trolls

I’m part of the Warmachine and Hordes module community, which has been growing fairly large recently. We’ve begun having problems with trolling, with one user in particular. The only recourse seems to be locking rooms, which ruins things for people who just want to watch games. Is there any way to have a user banned by IP?

No, sorry, there’s no way to do that at present.

Baning by IP is too imprecise a tool—it’s very likely that the person
you’re having a problem with is connecting via a dynamic IP, so banning
his previous IP would do you little good.

We’re considering what to do about this problem for VASSAL 4. What
exactly is the person you’re having a problem with doing?

J.

He’s not using a dynamic IP; it’s been the same each time. I recorded it, but I don’t have it with me at the moment. I can PM it to you when I get it again. Apart from being generally being obnoxious, he has a habit of adding random terrain to the board, adding models and moving players’ models about.

This guy persists in his trolling. Is there really nothing that can be done? His IP has been consistently the same, so it’s not dynamic.

And now this idiot is going around using the names of other people and acting like a tool.

This would be so much easier if you just gave Hobo control over such things.

It’s annoying that you guys will not to do anything about it.

The guy, using someone else’s name joins a game.

Spams CTRL+C and crashes 20+ people’s Vassal clients.

Do something about him already.

His former name is “Dragon of the Deep”
He’s using Indragnir’s name at present.
IP address 76.111.68.252

Turns out it was a 12yo child and quite a dumbass.

He didn’t realize that the gamestate was shared. I’ve shown him how to start his own games.

Hopefully, this will alleviate the issue.

He does realise. He’s lying so he can keep causing trouble. I really hope something can be done.

We can’t simply wave our magic wand to have a better room-locking
solution. Somoene would have to design it, write the code for it, and
test it, taking care that it doesn’t break existing clients. If you’d
like to do that, please submit a patch.

If there’s still a problem when I get home, I’ll block that IP address,
but it’s not something I consider to be a good solution.

J.

Thanks, I know it’s not ideal, but anything you can do is very much appreciated.

Is the problem with the troll still happening?

J.

Yes, it is. He’s doing it less often, but he’s still doing it.
