Drag and drop is different

Postby Brigz » September 13th, 2012, 5:50 pm

Ever since I upgraded to Vassal 3.1.20 from 3.1.17 I've noticed a difference with dragging and dropping counters. Used to be with 3.1.17 when I would drag a counter to another location I'd see a semi-transparency of that counter until I released the mouse button. Now with 3.1.20 when I drag a counter I see nothing; the counter is invisible until I release the mouse button. Is this a new feature or is my configuration wrong. I cetainly is a lot more helpful to see a "ghost" image of the counter you are dragging. Is there some kind of setting I've missed? I would like very much to see that semi-transparent counter when I'm dragging it because it sure makes placement a lot easier.

This isn't an intentional change.

1) Does it happen in all modules for you? If not, which ones does it
happen with?

2) Does it happen in 3.1.18 and 3.1.19 as well?

Thanks for the quick reply.

It happens in all mods. Mod's I've downloaded and mods I've made. I've even made simple test mods and it does it with them too.

I upgraded directly from 3.1.17 to 3.1.20. I never used 3.1.18 or 3.1.19.

When I was running 3.1.17 I even used mods that were made with both .1.18 and .1.19 and they always worked perfectly. It was only until I installed 3.1.20 that the drag and drop thing happened. It's the only "problem" I've had with 3.1.20. Every thing else appears to work fine.

Which version of Java are you using? On which OS?

Please try 3.1.18 and 3.1.19, and let us know if either of those
exhibit the problem for you. This will help us track down when the
change occurred.

I installed both .1.18 and .1.19 a got the same result. Loaded .1.17 and now it didn't show the "ghost" counter image. That is strange because before I upgraded from .1.17 to .1.20 it showed the ghost image. I loaded .1.20 again and it was the same.

I'm using Java 7 Update 7

Have you recently installed a different version of Java?

I installed Java 7 Update 7 on Sept. 2. I think I installed 3.1.20 a day or two after that. Because I installed several versions of Vassal yesterday, to check to see if they affected anything, I don't have an exact date when I first installed 3.1.20.

What I'm asking about is which versions of Java and VASSAL worked for
you as pairs. I don't care about the dates.

So 3.1.17 doesn't work for you with Java 7 Update 7, then?

Correct.

This is hard to pin down, because I installed new versions of Vassal and Java at about the same time.

Just to clarrify, I use Vassal on a daily basis editing and modifying various mods. I first noticed this after I installed 3.1.20. When ever I upgrade Vassal I always run a few modules after the install to see if anything has changed. That's when I first noticed this one change. So I'm pretty sure it was a result of going from 3.1.17 directly to 3.1.20.

Try 3.1.20 with Java 7 Update 6. Does that work?

Same. I have a 64 bit system and noticed that the Java program I've been using was a 32 bit version. So I downloaded the 64 bit Java and the results were the same. Everything runs fine except the drag and drop transparancy.

Can you get back to any state where transparency works?

No.

Just to make sure we are on the same wave-length: This is totally limited to dragging and dropping units on the maps. The transparencys used in counter image creation work fine.
