could someone explain to me what the *.VMDX extension is and how do I use them?

it is a vassal module extension (literally)
Think of it like the game of Arkham Horror. When you buy it you only get the base game. The Dunwich Horror is an extension of Arkham Horror but must be bought separately.
Vassal Extension work the same way allowing you to add content to a base module without having to change the base module
