Windows 8

Thus spake Lorenzo26:

yes.
I unsinstall vassal, delete all temp files and reinstall.
It doen’t work :frowning:

There’s no reason to uninstall VASSAL. The problem is with reading or
writing this temporary file. Can you check what permissions your user
account has for doing that?

J.

But the temporary file is readed one time only after reboot/install and not after i close the program.
Where can i find permissions and what permission to search for ?

To reinstall vassal is at the moment the only way i have to launch the program for one shot… and only after a reboot.

after reboot and reinstall :
first time : work properly
second time : open bug window
third time : nothing happens

on the third try, just a file in Roaming\vassal\ seems to change ; it’s named “lock”

I don’t know Windows well. I suppose you’d need to look at the file
properties in the file manager.

J.

this file is removed when you close vassal ?
The first time i launch vassal it create this sort of file and when i close vassal, this file is erased…
It’s only after the second launch it says the file may not be opened and it is not erased (not the same name for it).

Try deleting the Temp directory and rebooting. It will automatically be
recreated with the correct preferences.

J.

now my situation is : i have vassal icon on the desk and i can’t launch it ; nothing happens.
To launch it, i have to desinstall, reboot and reinstall.

It’s what i did before a reinstall.
And same happens : first try ok, then second time bug window, third time nothing happens except the date of “lock” file in roaming\vassal

What size is the temporary file the second time?

J.

i need to desinstall reboot and reinstall to answer…

i do something really trivial !
Before reinstalling, i completly delete the roaming\vassal\ directory.
Now it seems to work !

Merci Joel ;-)

Hmm, I’m unsure why that would help, but I’m glad your problem is
solved.

J.

Joel,

my problem is back !
After a windows update this morning.
And this time after desinstalling vassal, deleting all vassal files in temp, roaming vassal, it works only one time after reinstalling.
I’m desesperate.

Laurent.

seems really to be a windows 8 compatibility problem.
With a right-clic on the program, i can solve this problem, asking W8 to run vassal as an XP program.
Seems to work for now…

We haven’t heard from anybody else having this problem on Windows 8.

Is anyone out there using Windows 8 without issue?

J.

We just had the a similar problem with a new laptop that had a Windows 8 (32bit) installed. Vassal would only open and operate normally if you put it in “Windows XP (SP3)” compatibility mode and start it as administrator.

Relevant settings that got vassal to load modules and operate them properly: on the desktop link rclick->properties, switch to compatibility tab, check use compatibility and choose “Windows XP (SP3)”, check the “start as administrator” option, press apply or ok.
(windows was a German brand, I translated on the fly, actual options might be named differently)

Cheers

Plese delete VASSAL’s errorLog, try running VASSAL without this
compatibility mode, and then post the new contents of the errorLog here.
I’d like to see what exactly is happening. You can find the errorLog
in C:\Users<username>\AppData\Roaming\VASSAL.

Will do when I see my friend and his laptop again soon. I would not worry too much as this is likely a Win8 <-> lwjgl issue that will auto-resolve soon™ (several java apps that use lwjgl have this problem, Minecraft frex, I presume you use it as well?)

No, we’re not using lwjgl.
