Loss of Hidden Unit Function

I Imported an ADC2 module to VASSAL. All the Hidden units functions seemed to work correctly. When signed in as the English player, French Ship and Leader units were hidden – the units showed a Flag but did not disclose the specific unit identification or characteristics. When signed in as the French Player, the English units were similarly hidden. When signed in as the Observer, units of both the English and French players were hidden. Other markers were intentionally visible to all parties.

When moved to the Tray, all units were visible; but when signed in as the English player, the English player’s units that would be hidden when moved to the map had a small “H” on the right side of the counter. Similarly, when signed in as the French player, the French units had a small “H.” This seemed the way that things were normal done.

Now after I created scenarios using the pre-defined set-up, all appeared normal. However, when supposedly “Hidden” units were now moved to the map from the Tray, they were visible to all parties. They were no longer hidden.

What happened? Any suggestions on how to correct this?

No responses here.

What I am going to try is do the whole thing over with 3.2.4 once again. If the problem continues, I will drop back to a former VASSAL version where things seemed to work better. Maybe 3.1.16 or 3.1.20.

What do you all think? What is the best VASSAL version to use?

Well, tried it again with 3.2.4 and the same results. Everything appears correct; however, when units that are supposed to be hidden are drawn from the Tray, they are no longer hidden. Clicking on and moving a unit in the Tray that should be hidden does show a reduced image of the hidden side while the counter is being moved, but upon placement on the map, the “hidden” unit becomes visible.

I am going to dump 3.2.4 and go back to 3.1.16 where these things used to work better and see if the correct results can be obtained.

You will have to wait for Michael Kiefte who wrote the ADC2 converter to come online.

Thus spake cgmclellan:

We can’t troubleshoot this without the module. If you go back to 3.1.16
rather than providing us with the module, that virtually guarantee that
if there’s a probelm, we will never fix it.

I’m on the road right now, so I can’t physically do anything.

The situation you describe sounds like it shouldn’t happen. Could you post
a link to the module in question?

Hi Michael,

Where do you want me to send the module?

OK, here is the URL to a download of the module: sendspace.com/file/0mw890

It is a new Import using VASSAL 3.1.20 instead of 3.2.4.

I have not even checked it yet to see if the same problems continued. The module is for Simulations Canada. The module isn’t finished yet.

WARNING!! Sendspace has lots of ad things for “download.” To download the actual module, click on the “Click here to start download from sendspace” space in the middle of the page.

With VASSAL 3.11.20 everything seems to work OK. I don’t know if the problem was I or the 3.2.4. Perhaps I will attempt to define the source of the problem later. Odds are that it is I.

Thanks for your testing.
The ADC2 converter is a very complicated piece of software that interacts with Vassal in a complex way. There where a number of changes in 3.2 that may have affected this. You will need to wait for Michael to look into the issues you have raised.

Except that if a module works under 3.1, in theory it should work in 3.2
irrespective of how it was made. The converted still produces valid
modules.

Charles, maybe you should send me that module after all.

I sent you a link to a private fileshare website last week, do you still
have that link?

Yes, I will try to find the original and the latest copy of the module and send you both. Probably won’t be until tomorrow though.

Thanks, cgm

Did you guys find a solution for this problem?

Yes
