I have wanted to start playing games on Vassal since I first heard about it a couple years ago. But I have no idea how to find opponents and get up and running. I have the feeling that I am not the only person in this position.
I will play just about anything to get started, as long as the learning curve is not too high.

My first recommendation is that you read the User’s Guide (found in the VASSAL help menu).
Finding opponents is not very intuitive or straightforward. Your best bet is to post in the game’s forum at Boardgamegeek (or Consimworld, if you’re looking to play wargames, which make up the vast majority of the existing VASSAL modules).
