It looks like all of the JARs are present.

To which of the other questions are you saying 'no'?

1) Does ~/.VASSAL exist?
2) If so, is there an errorLog file in it?

Please add '-verbose' to the invocation of java in VASSAL.sh:

  java -verbose -classpath lib/Vengine.jar VASSAL.launch.ModuleManager  

What output do you get when you run VASSAL.sh now?
