Play it like real game : Research phase requires to keep cards, automatic paid for 3M€ each, or discard. It's possible to pass to another player, but this can't be simultaneous. From Research, keep to Hand. From Hand, Play to Cards (for the price of the card) or move it manually to the Cards Map if you want to pay with Titanium or Steel. Only Red cards can be flipped, and only on the Cards Map. All cards are drown face up, and will remain so, until you discard them, or flip (reds). Sell Patent is a way to discard a card from the hand. Only situation where you can have a card in Hand you may still need to pay 3M€ for, is with the Inventors Guild. So pay manually if you keep ... and as you can't discard but sell patent, THINK OF PAYING BACK that extra 1M€. It's a rare situation that won't trouble the rest of the game.
