Historical Background: Following the defeat of the German Kursk Offensive in July of 1943 the Soviets unleashed a series of major offensives to clear the Ukraine. By mid-January of 1944 they had liberated the Ukraine north and east of the Dnepr, crossed the Dnepr bend reaching Kirovograd, captured Kiev and driven deep into the western Ukraine capturing Zhitomitor and Berdishev. The Germans, however, did maintain a hold on the Dnepr near Korsun in an exposed salient 70 miles southwest of Kiev and west of Cherkassy. This salient was a tempting target for the Soviets. In the 2nd week of January, 1944 Stavka ordered the 1st and 2nd Ukrainian Fronts to conduct major operations against the base of the salient. The purpose would be to surround and eliminate the two German Corps believed to be in the salient. The above Soviet offensive and the subsequent German counter attack forms the basis for the game’s scenarios.
The new 2.0 version module is a completely new version made from scratch. The 1.4 was a out growth of a play test module. There is NO compatibility between the two modules. Saved games from 1.4 will NOT work with 2.0. Players will see greater counter functionality in the new version and higher quality graphics. There is no reason to download the old 1.4 version except to play a game file created with it.
