I'm getting old, I've played some of my dad's old war-games, and have fond memories of the more "simple" games. I recently regained interest in Magic Realm because I have his old copy. That and Wizard's Quest. Really like those fantasy games. I recently contributed American Heritage: Dogfight because I miss playing it with my sister.

My Story

I've gamed my whole life.

Wait, that sounds wrong.

I've been a gamer my whole life. As long as I can remember I've played various games covering the gamut of legal and publicly available games. Creating games is something that isn't easy for me, but I gained interest in it at a very specific moment. I was playing with a handheld, LCD, two-button game. It was extremely simple: move your character left and right to catch falling pips. The game is over when X-number pips fall past you, otherwise you score points. I got good enough at the game that it was boring and then it clicked.

What is it that makes this game work?

I flipped it over, unscrewed the back, and opened a whole new world. I couldn't believe my eyes. The LCD was clear with a paper backing for a background. The circuit board had so few chips and circuits on it, there was no way I'd figure out the exact nature of their functions at my age (about 10 years old). The interface buttons were the most obvious, consisting of "closed" circuits that "opened" when a conductive material was placed across them (the rubber button).

And my brain did some flips.

I love playing games. It's that simple. I used to love learning all about games, but then I found D&D and started creating all the things. I learned computer programming (nothing complex, simple BASIC stuff; fun though, and I still try) and started creating content for games there. I'm still heavy into D&D, and I love my video games. And the days I can get out and table-top games with friends are days I enjoy.
